یہ یونیورسٹی 2002 میں اس وقت کے اسلامی جمہوریہ پاکستان کے صدر جنرل پرویز مشرف کے حکم پر وفاقی حکومت کے ایک چارٹر کے ذریعے گلگت میں قائم کی گئی تھی اور جولائی 2011 میں اس کے اسکردو کیمپس کا افتتاح اس وقت کے وزیر اعلیٰ گلگت بلتستان سید نے کیا تھا۔ مہدی شاہ، اس کیمپس کو بعد میں 2017 میں آزاد یونیورسٹی آف بلتستان میں اپ گریڈ کر دیا گیا۔ 2014 میں KIU کے چانسلر اور اسلامی جمہوریہ پاکستان کے صدر محترم ممنون حسین کے دورہ کے دوران KIU ہنزہ کے قیام کا اعلان کیا۔ اور خواتین کیمپس۔ نتیجتاً، KIU ہنزہ کیمپس نے 2016 میں اپنے تعلیمی پروگراموں کا آغاز کیا۔ اس کے علاوہ، KIU کے غذر اور دیامر کیمپس 2018 میں HEC کے وژن 2025 کے تحت قائم کیے گئے تاکہ ضلعی سطح پر اعلیٰ تعلیم تک رسائی فراہم کی جا سکے۔
